What Makes a Great Neighborhood? The Power of Third Places

One thing people look for when relocating to a town or city is proximity to shops, restaurants, and entertainment.

But what they're really looking for are Third Places.

Ray Oldenburg developed his theory of the "third place" in his 1989 book, The Great Good Place. Your first place is home. Your second place is work. Oldenburg argues that Third Places are the often-underappreciated public gathering spots in our towns and cities that are vital for civic life, democracy, and reducing loneliness.

What's a key indicator of a Third Place?

Regulars.

When you think about your local pub, gym, coffee shop, or neighborhood restaurant, you'll probably also remember some of the people you regularly encounter there.

Maybe it's a friendly server.

An eccentric old guy who always sits in the same spot.

The person you see every morning getting coffee.

Or the guy at the gym who somehow always seems to be there when you are.

And it's these regulars who establish an environment's unique charm and personality. They anchor the social atmosphere and transform an otherwise empty room into a welcoming community hub.

And that community feel is something big-box chains and algorithms can't replicate.

Regulars add value simply by showing up.

In a way, their presence is a vote for that place.

And that's the power you have to contribute to your local community: help create great Third Places.

You can become a regular at your local pub, restaurant, coffee shop, library, or even outdoor park. And just by showing up frequently, you're contributing to the community and helping create an atmosphere that other people want to be a part of.

That's good for the local business.

It's good for reducing loneliness in your community.

And it may even be good for how we interact with one another as neighbors and citizens.

So, be a hero.

Create great Third Places in your community simply by being a regular.

Show up.

Get to know people.

Become part of the fabric of the place you call home.

Because sometimes, what makes a neighborhood great isn't another amenity on a list.

It's the people who keep showing up.
